Kids Jiu Jitsu & Muay Thai
Building Young Technicians on the Feet and GroundEnrolling your child in our program is a powerful investment in their growth. Through martial arts, kids gain vital life skills like discipline, respect, and self-control—qualities that transcend the mat and benefit them at school, home, and in life’s challenges.
As they progress and earn belt ranks in BJJ and Muay Thai, their self-confidence soars, helping them tackle life’s obstacles with pride and determination. And it’s not just about mental growth; these martial arts keep kids active, enhancing strength, flexibility, and coordination, and fostering healthy habits from an early age. Our programs offer a complete path to personal development, equipping your child for success in all aspects of life.
What Makes Kids Martial Arts Great
- We teach children essential self-discipline and focus skills, applicable in all life areas. The structured environment of training hones their ability to concentrate, follow instructions, and commit to regular practice. This discipline improves their academic focus, attention to detail, and task management. These skills benefit not only their current academic and social life but also lay a strong foundation for future personal and professional success.
- We equip children with self-defense skills, boosting their confidence and security. The training enhances self-reliance, situational awareness, quicker reaction times, and decision-making under pressure. This newfound confidence extends beyond physical defense, fostering an assertive, self-assured attitude in everyday life, vital for their mental and emotional health.
- As children advance in martial arts, mastering techniques and earning belts, their confidence and self-esteem significantly improve. This growth is fueled by the accomplishment of learning new skills and reaching milestones. Martial arts’ structured goals and rewards provide a challenging yet attainable success path. Overcoming these challenges bolsters their self-belief, positively affecting their academic, social, and personal endeavors, and promoting a resilient, positive self-image.
- Martial arts provide a holistic stress management tool for children, channeling their physical and mental energy into activity that reduces stress hormones and boosts endorphins. The discipline and focus inherent in training teach mindfulness and breathing techniques, aiding in anxiety and stress management. This blend of physical activity and mental focus equips children with effective coping mechanisms for life’s pressures, enhancing their overall mental well-being.

Coaches
Kenneth Brown
Head Instructor
2nd Degree BJJ Black Belt
Kenneth received his black belt in 2013 from Mike Moses, who runs Evolve Academy in Gaithersburg. And it was at that academy that he started teaching when he was a purple belt. Since then, he has been passionate about the both science and art of making Jiu Jitsu make sense. In fact, even now, he is constantly evaluating his own methodology and making improvements where possible. It is that drive that motivated him to teach full time.
Peter Kofinas
Kids BJJ Instructor
BJJ Purple Belt
Peter started training at 2nd Gear in 2018. As a Chemical Engineering Professor and Chair, he has been teaching and doing research at the University of Maryland for nearly 30 years. He started Jiu Jitsu in his fifties and since then has gone above and beyond to be on the mat as much as possible, even when traveling nationally and internationally. He strongly believes in continuous improvement, and that teachers are as much learners as their students. His passion for teaching in academia has translated to teaching jiu jitsu, where he continuously improves his own skills by training but also by teaching others.
Andrew D'Costa
Muay Thai Head Coach
Andrew has been a martial artist for 30 years. He is a 3rd Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo, a TCB Champion, and also has extensive knowledge in other forms of martial arts such as Boxing, Wrestling, and Kung Fu. For him, martial arts is not an act, but a way of life.
